"Seren...what?"

That's quite a frequent reaction to the company name. You too may be wondering what's in the name?

The story's actually quite simple. The term serendipity is used in science to indicate a fortunate discovery made by accident [1] and is borrowed from the Persian tale of The Three Princes of Serendip. A list of such fortunate discoveries can be found here.

In 1998 the Italian semiotician and novelist Umberto Eco dedicated an entire book to the topic [2]. It's brilliantly written and definitively a worthwhile read – and we're happy to admit, it was the source of inspiration for the company name. In every-day language, serendipitous can also signify something occurring by chance in a beneficial way.

SERENDIPITIES GMBH often offers services connected to software engineering – a discipline which, if taken seriously, doesn't leave a lot to chance, you may remark. And indeed, we do believe that following a sound methodological approach is an important success factor for technology-heavy projects. Nevertheless, a mere set of tools and practices cannot guarantee that the best solution to a problem is always found. We believe that engineering methods are not only important for the direct results they facilitate to achieve, but - at least equally importantly so - because they liberate members of a project team or a steering committee from allocating unnecessary time resolving issues, which can be tackled in a straight-forward and repetitive manner. This way, more resources can be allocated to creative problem solving. Our aim is thus to provide a «culture medium», which facilitates such creative activities. Obviously, useful discoveries cannot be enforced, but we believe we can make them slightly more likely.

Serendipitously, in 2001 – the year SERENDIPITIES GMBH was founded – Miramax Pictures released a romantic comedy aptly named Serendipity, starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. You can find a brief description of the film [3] and a list of some blunders people have found [4].
